Leadville Trail 100 Run

Been wondering where I’ve been lately? I’ve been spending my August in Colorado with my son, daughter-in-law, and grand-daughter. I’ve been taking care of Henrie while the family transitions back to into their work schedule, my son and daughter-in-law are teachers so have to return to school.

I know that this is not my usual kind of post but had to share this with you. My son, daughter-in-law and some of their friends are runners. Some of them are ultra runners and this past weekend their friend Kyle Pietari ran in the Leadville Trail 100 Run. It is a 100 mile run through the mountains in Leadville. Leadville by the way is at an elevation of 10,152 feet!

The race starts at 4am the first 50 miles are run on their own after that the runners can have pacers. My son, Joshua, and another of Kyles friends, Eric, were his pacers. Eric was the first pacer and Joshua finished the race with Kyle.

As you can imagine running in and completing this race is an amazing feat. But this year Kyle blew it away. Kyle finished 4th overall and 1st in his age category! The three first place runners were Ian Sherman, Nick Clark and Michael Aish. Michael Aish is a two-time Olympian by the way and Kyle finished just minutes after him. Kyle also finished before Scott Jurek one of his hero’s; you’ll know who Scott Jurek is if you’ve read the book Born to Run.

The rest of us we served as part of Kyle’s crew at the 11 check points- crew members refill water, supply gu’s and whatever else the runner needs. But let’s face it all I really did was take photos and cheer Kyle on – it was amazing to watch and exciting to see Kyle finish they way he did – you rock Kyle!
